PHP 5.5.0 is out and available for Debian 7.0 “Wheezy”

On June 20th 2013, the PHP group has released the first stable version of PHP 5.5.

The key features of PHP 5.5.0 include:

  • Added generators and coroutines.
  • Added “finally” keyword.
  • Added simplified password hashing API.
  • Added support for constant array/string dereferencing.
  • Added Class Name Resolution As Scalar Via “class” Keyword
  • Added support for using empty() on the result of function calls and other expressions
  • Added support for non-scalar Iterator keys in foreach
  • Added support for list in foreach
  • Added Zend Opcache extension and enable building it by default.
  • The GD library has been upgraded to version 2.1 adding new functions and improve existing functionality.
  • A lot more improvements and fixes

Changes that affect compatibility:

  • PHP logo GUIDs have been removed
  • Windows XP and 2003 support dropped
  • Case insensitivity is no longer locale specific. All case insensitive matching for function, class and constant names is now performed in a locale independent manner according to ASCII rules

I’m proud to announce that the corresponding packages are now available on Dotdeb for Debian 7.0 “Wheezy”, on both amd64 and i386 architectures.

To upgrade your Wheezy boxes to PHP 5.5.0, just add these two lines to your sources.list :

deb http://packages.dotdeb.org wheezy-php55 all
deb-src http://packages.dotdeb.org wheezy-php55 all

Please note that :

  • php5-apc is not available for PHP 5.5 yet. Instead, PHP OPcache (the open-sourced Zend Optimizer+) has been included and activated by default in php5-common. And if you need a user cache, please install php5-apcu.
  • php5-xcache is missing too. Don’t upgrade if you need it.
  • PHP 5.4 will still be considered as default branch on Debian 7.0
  • PHP 5.5 won’t be packaged for Debian 6.0 “Squeeze”. Upgrade to Wheezy instead.

Please read the Changelog and the migration guide (be aware of the backward incompatible changes) before upgrading.

Redis 2.6.14, for Debian Wheezy and Squeeze

Redis 2.6.14 has been released, bringing the following changes (take a look at the Changelog) :

  • [FIX] AOF bug: expire could be removed from key on AOF rewrite.
  • [FIX] Allow writes from scripts called by AOF loading in read-only slaves.
  • [FIX] Sentinel: parse new version of INFO replication output correctly.
  • [NEW] Reset masterauth if an empty string is configured.

The upgrade urgency is HIGH because of the following two issues:

  • Lua scripting + Replication + AOF in slaves problem (see Issue #1164).
  • AOF + expires possible race condition (see Issue #1079).

The packages are now available for both Debian 7.0 “Wheezy” and Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” on both amd64 and i386 architectures.

PHP 5.3.26 for Squeeze

On June 6th 2013, the PHP group has released PHP 5.3.26.

These releases fix about 15 bugs, including CVE-2013-2110. All users of PHP are encouraged to upgrade to PHP 5.4.16.

The corresponding packages are now available on Dotdeb for Debian 6.0 “Squeeze”, on both amd64 and i386 architectures.

PHP 5.4.16 for Wheezy and Squeeze

On June 6th 2013, the PHP group has released PHP 5.4.16.

These releases fix about 15 bugs, including CVE-2013-2110. All users of PHP are encouraged to upgrade to PHP 5.4.16.

The corresponding packages are now available on Dotdeb :

  • for Debian 7.0 “Wheezy” and Debian 6.0 “Squeeze”,
  • on both amd64 and i386 architectures.

Please note that php5-readline is now a separate package and that php5-pinba is back.

MySQL 5.5.31 for Squeeze

Packages of MySQL 5.5.31 are now available for Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” on both amd64 and i386 architectures. They fix some serious vulnerabilities and InnoDB-, partition- and replication-related bugs as well.

Please note that the Pinba engine has also been rebuilt to be used against this new version.

PHP 5.4.15 & PHP 5.3.25 / for Wheezy & Squeeze

On May 9th 2013, the PHP group has released PHP 5.4.15 and PHP 5.3.25.

These releases fix about 10 bugs aswell as upgrading the bundled libmagic library. All users of PHP are encouraged to upgrade to PHP 5.4.15.

The corresponding packages are now available on Dotdeb :

  • for Debian 7.0 “Wheezy” and Debian 6.0 “Squeeze”,
  • on both amd64 and i386 architectures.

Please note that the php5-ffmpeg and php5-pinba packages for PHP 5.4 are missing on Wheezy. They should appear in the next few days, after their source code has been made compatible with Debian’s multi-arch scheme.

Percona toolkit 2.2.2

Percona toolkit 2.2.2 is now available on Dotdeb for both Debian 7.0 “Wheezy” and Debian 6.0 “Squeeze”. It fixes bugs in the previous release and provide usability enhacements to the toolkit.

Security : Nginx 1.4.1

Nginx 1.4.1 has been released on May 7th 2013, with the fix for the stack-based buffer overflow security problem in nginx 1.3.9 – 1.4.0, discovered by Greg MacManus, of iSIGHT Partners Labs (CVE-2013-2028).

As a consequence, Dotdeb’s packages of Nginx 1.4.1 are now available for both Debian 7.0 “Wheezy” and Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” (amd64/i386).

Debian 7.0 “Wheezy” has been released

Now that Debian 7.0 “Wheezy” has been released, I’m glad to announce that it’s supported by Dotdeb. Feel free to change your sources.list and to upgrade your boxes.

About Wheezy & Dotdeb

Wheezy is supported as of today and these packages will be maintained :

  • PHP : 5.4 and 5.5 (as soon as it’s GA)
  • MySQL : 5.6 or equivalent (Percona Server, MariaDB…)
  • Nginx
  • Redis
  • Zabbix
  • Percona toolkit

(PHP 5.4, Zabbix and Percona toolkit packages are missing now, they will appear in the next few days)

That means that the support for these packages will be discontinued in Wheezy :

  • MySQL 5.5. The Debian project will be in charge of the 5.5 branch. Transition is seamless.
  • PHP 5.3 (you’ll have to stick to Squeeze)

About Squeeze & Dotdeb

Squeeze will be supported by Dotdeb as long as it is supported by Debian (one year), with the current lineup :

  • PHP 5.4 and PHP 5.3 (as long as it’s supported by the PHP Group). No PHP 5.5.
  • MySQL 5.5. No MySQL 5.6 or equivalent.
  • Nginx stable
  • Redis
  • Zabbix
  • Percona toolkit

Redis 2.6.13, for Debian Wheezy and Squeeze

Redis 2.6.13 has been released, bringing the following changes (take a look at the Changelog) :

  • [FIX] Throttle BGSAVE attempt on saving error.
  • [FIX] redis-cli: raise error on bad command line switch.
  • [FIX] Redis/Jemalloc Gitignore were too aggressive.
  • [FIX] Test: fix RDB test checking file permissions.
  • [FIX] Sentinel: always redirect on master->slave transition.
  • [FIX] Lua updated to version 5.1.5. Fixes rare scripting issues.
  • [NEW] AOF: improved latency figures with slow/busy disks.
  • [NEW] Sentinel: turn old master into a slave when it comes back.
  • [NEW] More explicit panic message on out of memory.
  • [NEW] redis-cli: --latency-history mode implemented.

The upgrade urgency is moderate, nothing very critical but upgrading is suggested if you experienced:

  1. Strange issues with Lua scripting.
  2. Not reconfigured reappearing master using Sentinel.
  3. Server continusly trying to save on save error.

This version of Redis may also help with AOF and slow / busy disks and latency issues.

The packages are now available for both Debian 7.0 “Wheezy” and Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” on both amd64 and i386 architectures.
